The RSI measures how strong gold's recent moves have been, on a scale from 0 to 100. It helps you judge momentum, but it is often misused as a simple buy and sell signal.

What it is
The relative strength index (RSI) compares recent gains with recent losses, usually over 14 candles. Above 70 is called overbought, and below 30 oversold.
In a strong trend, RSI can stay above 70 for a long time, so overbought does not mean price must fall. RSI is more useful for judging momentum, and for spotting divergence: price makes a new high but RSI does not, which can warn that the move is losing strength.
How you use it on gold
Gold's trending weeks punish anyone who sells every overbought reading. In an uptrend, RSI often moves between about 40 and 80, and pullbacks that stop near 40 can be a sign of strength. In a sideways market the classic 70 and 30 readings work better. Decide which market you are in before you use the number.
What you will learn
- Reading RSI in trends and in sideways markets
- Spotting divergence, and its limits
- Using RSI ranges to judge momentum
- Combining RSI with zones and structure
- Avoiding the overbought and oversold trap
One mistake to avoid
Selling because RSI is above 70 in a strong uptrend, or buying because it is below 30 in a strong downtrend. This fights the trend and can lose again and again. Identify the market type first.
YouTube or learning with us?
RSI videos are everywhere on YouTube. Some creators teach the basics free and charge for the advanced level.
Pros
- Free and easy to add to any chart.
- Simple at a basic level.
Cons
- Many videos teach sell above 70, buy below 30, which fails in trends.
- Divergence is shown where it worked.
- Little about when RSI is the wrong tool.
How we teach it
We use RSI as a supporting tool. It adds to the picture of momentum around a zone, but it never starts a trade by itself, and we read it differently in trends and ranges.
- RSI taught by market type, not as one rule
