Guide 10 · platforms & execution

Platforms & Getting Started

Once you understand the concepts, you still have to actually trade — on a platform, through a broker, with real execution. This is the practical, hands-on side most guides skip.

The short answer

Trading concepts are one thing; actually placing trades is another. This pillar covers the practical setup: MetaTrader and other platforms, how to choose one, the crucial demo-to-live transition, how execution and slippage really work, and placing your first trade safely. A platform is a tool — it does not give you an edge.

What a trading platform is

A trading platform is the software you use to see prices, analyse charts and place orders with your broker. It is your cockpit. Choosing and learning one properly — before risking real money — removes a whole category of costly beginner mistakes.

This pillar is the practical, hands-on complement to the concepts in the beginner guide.

MetaTrader and the main platforms

MetaTrader 4 and 5 are the industry-standard forex platforms, but they are not the only option — cTrader, TradingView and broker-proprietary platforms all exist. See what MetaTrader is, and how the platforms compare.

Choosing a platform

The right platform depends on your broker, your device, and what you need. See how to choose a trading platform — and remember it goes hand in hand with choosing a broker.

Demo vs live accounts

A demo account lets you practise with virtual money in real conditions. Using one first is essential — but the jump to a live account changes everything psychologically. See demo vs live trading.

Order execution and slippage

The price you see is not always the price you get. Execution, slippage and requotes are the mechanics of how your order actually fills, and they cost real money if you do not understand them. See execution and slippage.

Placing your first trade

When you are ready, there is a safe, methodical way to place your first real trade — small, planned, and with a stop in place. See how to place your first trade.

A platform is not an edge

One honest reminder: no platform, indicator package or fancy interface makes you money. The tools are just tools. Your results come from an edge, risk management and discipline — never from the software. This is education, not advice.
